Tech synthetics or natural fabrics?

When choosing, it is important to take into account individual characteristics, including the condition of the skin.

Today, you can find uniforms made from a wide variety of materials, from natural fabrics like cotton and linen to high-tech synthetic novelties that just don’t train for you. Moreover, high-quality sportswear can be made from different fabrics: the principle “the more natural, the better” does not always work. The form of which material is safer for the skin and what you should pay attention to when choosing, we understand together with dermatologist Maria Vasilyeva .

What should be sportswear?

When choosing a sports suit, you should pay attention first of all to convenience and comfort. The form should not rub, press, overtighten – or, as it is often called today, “sculpt”. Clothing for training should provide freedom of movement, not constrain and allow the skin to “breathe” so as not to disturb the natural heat exchange.

What fabrics are the uniforms made from?

Today, tracksuits – trousers, leggings, shorts, sweatshirts, turtlenecks, tops – are made from a variety of materials. If we talk about natural fabrics, most often it is cotton, knitwear and canvas, less often – silk and wool (for winter sports).

Cotton is good because it provides air and moisture permeability. At the same time, it is quite durable, practically does not fade and, importantly, hypoallergenic. However, cotton clothing stretches rather quickly and loses its “presentation”.

Canvas is made from cotton, but this material is more dense and, accordingly, wear-resistant. The canvas shape is also hygienic and wind resistant.

The main disadvantage of wool clothing is difficult care. So that it does not lose its original appearance and lasts for a long time, you need to approach the washing of such products wisely. And given that the sports uniform needs to be washed after each workout, this is quite problematic.

Pure silk is often not used to make tracksuits. It is added to other fabrics to achieve a certain look and increase strength.

As for synthetic materials, they are innumerable on the sportswear market. Big brands year after year invent new technologies and strive to improve the quality of clothing. As a rule, artificial fabrics are highly elastic, provide good heat and air exchange. However, some may cause an allergic reaction.

What materials are better to choose?

When choosing clothes for sports, you must first look at the composition of the fabric, the dermatologist notes. Owners of sensitive skin or prone to acne (acne) should abandon synthetic materials such as viscose or nylon. They do not allow moisture and air to pass through and can provoke dermatitis or acne or aggravate existing ones.

The dermatologist advises giving preference to natural or semi-natural fabrics (cotton, linen, bamboo). Such materials absorb moisture and have good breathable properties. They do not create a greenhouse effect that promotes the growth of bacteria on the surface of the skin and thereby provokes or aggravates certain skin diseases (acne, atopic dermatitis, epidermophytosis, etc.).
